Donovan fell dead by police fire in the early hours of Tuesday (8/30) in Columbus, according to APE/MPE. Video from a body camera carried by one of the officers, who had an arrest warrant, shows an officer accompanied by a dog opening the door to a room and then, almost immediately, shoots against the 20-year-old who was in a bed.
An investigation has been launched into the incident and Andrew Ginther, mayor of Columbus, pledged “full transparency” about “the tragic death of Donovan Lewis”. “The family will go to court,” said Rex Elliott, a lawyer for the young man’s family, without elaborating. “In one shot after another the video reveals the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog (…) killed in cold blood a 20-year-old, unarmed young man who remained in his bed, following the orders of the police,” he stressed. Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said the officer fired as Lewis appeared to raise one of his hands holding something. Only an electronic cigarette was found next to him, she added.
