The family of a young African-American man who was killed by police in his bed will go to court, his lawyer said, in a case that has sparked outrage in Ohio.

Donovan Lewis, 20, was killed early Tuesday in Columbus, capital of this northeastern US state.

Video from a body camera carried by one of the officers, who had an arrest warrant, shows an officer accompanied by a dog opening the door to a room and then almost immediately firing at Lewis, who was lying on a bed.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and Andrew Ginther, mayor of Columbus, pledged “full transparency” about “the tragic death of Donovan Lewis”.

“The family will go to court,” said Rex Elliott, a lawyer for the young man’s family, without elaborating.

“In one shot after another the video reveals the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog (…) killed in cold blood a 20-year-old, unarmed young man who remained in his bed, following the orders of the police,” he stressed.
