Putin denies Gorbachev Yeltsin honors and won’t attend his funeral

Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute to Mikhail Gorbachev, but will not attend the funeral of the late former Soviet leadera decision that reflects the Kremlin’s ambivalence about Gorbachev’s political legacy.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that, before departing for a working trip to Russia’s westernmost Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, Putin visited the Moscow hospital where Mikhail Gorbachev’s body is being kept before Saturday’s funeral to lay flowers in his coffin.

“Unfortunately, the president’s work schedule wouldn’t allow him to do it this Saturday, so he decided to do it today.”Peskov told reporters.

Putin “bowed” to Yeltsin

In doing so, the Russian President distances himself even further from the last Soviet leader by denying the man who failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet empire the full state honors awarded to Boris Yeltsin.

Gorbachev was “deified” in the West for enabling Eastern Europe to escape Soviet communist control, but he was unloved inside Russia for the chaos his reforms unleashed on “perestroika”.

He will be buried on Saturday after a public ceremony in Moscow’s Hall of Styles.

The Great Hall, in front of the Kremlin, hosted the funerals of Soviet leaders Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin and Leonid Brezhnev. Gorbachev will receive a military guard of honor – but his funeral will not be a state one.

State television showed (Thursday, September 1) Putin formally placing red roses next to Gorbachev’s coffin – which was left open as is customary in Russia – at Moscow’s Central Hospital, where he died on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, aged 91.

Putin made the sign of the cross in Russian Orthodox fashion, before briefly touching the edge of the coffin.

When Yeltsin died in 2007, Putin declared national mourning and, along with world leaders, attended a grand state funeral at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.
