Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was defeated Wednesday in a special election held to fill that state’s lone seat in the House of Representatives, which was being characterized as a test ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

Mrs. Palin, 58, had hoped to make her return to the political spotlight by taking the seat, which was left vacant after the sudden death of Republican Don Young, who had held it for 49 years.

But despite being strongly endorsed by former President Donald Trump, she was defeated by Democratic candidate Mary Peltola, who will represent Alaska in the national delegation until Nov. 8, when all 435 House seats are up for reelection.

Mrs. Palin is eligible to run on the new ballot.

The conservative Christian has played a key role in the Republican party’s populist turn over the past decade to win white votes from the Democrats, the party of President Joe Biden.

She came into the limelight in 2008 when she was chosen by then-GOP presidential nominee John McCain as his running mate.

Her rise, according to several observers, paved the way for Donald Trump to the White House, which he would occupy eight years later.

Sarah Palin has said she supported the real estate mogul from the start of his 2016 campaign because he had supported her in the past.

Donald Trump has been trying to consolidate his control of the Republican party by backing caucus candidates who are strongly in his favor against more centrist or moderate right-wing opponents — with modest results so far.

In the midterm elections, voters will also be asked to choose the people who will occupy one-third of the Senate seats and some thirty governorships.
