The UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grudberg, on Wednesday condemned an attack by Shiite Houthi rebels on army positions near Taiz, in the southwestern part of the country, that killed ten soldiers on Monday.

“I condemn the attack (…) from a zone controlled by Ansar Allah (s.b.: the Houthi rebel movement), which threatens to seriously worsen the humanitarian situation for civilians,” the Swedish diplomat said in the press release that made public by his services.

Despite a cease-fire agreement in place since April and renewed for a second time in early August, the rebels, who are considered close to Iran, launched an attack near Taiz on Sunday night, killing 10 soldiers and injuring seven others.

The government, which has supported a Saudi-led military alliance since 2015, denounced the “dangerous escalation”, which threatens UN efforts to extend a truce that has given the country a breather after eight years of devastating war. .

In his statement, Hans Grudberg once again called on “the parties to seize the opportunity offered by the extension of the ceasefire to demonstrate their will to end the conflict (…) and to honor their commitments.”

The armed conflict in Yemen has killed hundreds of thousands of people, uprooted millions more and plunged the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, according to the UN.
