A comprehensive public consultation-step for the opinions of all those interested in the future of Kassandra Mines

After the short break in August, the process of the open consultation of the Environmental and Social Impact Study of Hellinikon Chrysos with the social partners and especially with the residents of the local community of NE Halkidiki that hosts the Kassandra Mines is starting again.

The start of the second phase of the dialogue is marked by the open meetings that will start it Thursday September 1st in Megali Panagiawill continue on September 2 in Stageiraat September 5 in Ierissos and will be completed on September 6 in Arnea. The events are an open invitation to all residents of each region to be informed in detail and personally about the footprint of the company’s investment plan as well as about the commitments it undertakes to manage the effects of the project in every aspect.

For Hellinikons Chrysos, building relationships of trust and mutual support is an important parameter for the long-term performance of the investment activity. As the trust is based on open and documented information, it proceeded to write an extensive and analytical Study in which all the effects of the project are collected for the first time and are captured based on scientific data and internationally recognized methodologies. Afterwards, Hellinikon Chrysos made public all the studies through its website, offering its social partners the opportunity to be informed and actively participate.

With a heightened sense of accountability and taking into account the volume and nature of the data presented, Greek Gold has developed an extensive information campaign, providing the public multiple opportunities to gain access to the material, to be informed but also to submit questions, suggestions and thoughts.

Specifically, in addition to access to the detailed texts of the studies, the following possibilities are provided to those who wish to participate in the process:

  • Access to archives of specialized studies for each impact area
  • Summaries of the studies to facilitate familiarization with the material
  • Possibility of sending comments and questions through the company’s website
  • Special information center that operates every Tuesday and Thursday in Neochori where interested parties can be personally informed about any question they may have
  • Availability of printed versions of the Study at the local community offices
  • Information campaign with distribution of leaflets, posters and other informational materials publicizing all available communication channels and inviting the public to open meetings.

The culmination of all the above are the open informational meetings that started at the end of July with presentations in Olympiada, Stratoni and Palaiochori and continue with the 4 new events in the areas mentioned above.

This approach is proof that Greek Gold, remains committed in its plan to implement the investment and proceed with the full development of Kassandra Mines which will unlock long-term benefits for all parties, as it is the first time that a mining company in Greece implements a dialogue of such breadth and depth for all the Environmental and Social impacts of its investment plan.

It is worth reminding that the investment plan of Hellinikon Chrysos includes investments with sustainability and social welfare criteria that will mobilize new investments overall 1.9 billion dollars and creation 3,000 permanent and well-paying direct jobs the majority of which will come from the Municipality of Aristoteli. At the same time, the local community is expected to be strengthened over time and essentially with more than 191 million euros in revenue from mining fees and additional investments in local social responsibility projects amounting to 80 million dollars for the implementation of infrastructure and development projects that will strengthen the local economy and will be a legacy after the completion of the mining activity.
