He claims he is eligible for parole

Convicted of the murder of his partner, Oscar Pistorius will appeal to the court in order to convince the South African authorities to proceed with his early release.

The former Paralympic gold medalist is serving 13-year prison sentence for murdering his girlfriend in 2013. Pistorius shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp through a locked toilet door, claiming at the time that he mistook her for a burglar.

The convicted former champion is reportedly seeking early release due to a dispute over when his sentence began.

Pistorius maintains that he has already served enough time in prison and eligible for parole. Therefore, according to his defense, the authorities should consider whether he can be released early.

In 2017, the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that Pistorius should serve 13 years and five months for Steenkamp’s murder, overturning an earlier, lighter sentence of six years for the murder. Last year, the same court ruled that the current sentence should be backdated to October 2014 when he was convicted of manslaughter.

Pistorius argues that this retroactive adjustment means he became eligible for suspension last February.

In this context, he wants the Gauteng High Court to order the suspensions board to hold a hearing for him. If Pistorius’ request is accepted, he requests that his hearing be held within 30 days of the relevant decision.
