1521 The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed

1791 Samuel Morse, American inventor and painter, creator of the telegraph and Morse signals, was born

1805 The Battle of Derna takes place in what is now Libya, between US marines under William Eaton and pirates under Yusuf Karamanlis, who are infesting the coast of North Africa. It is the first US land operation on foreign soil. The marines are assisted by 500 Greek and Arab mercenaries. (First Barbary War)

1864 Giannis Makrygiannis, a leading figure of the Greek Revolution, died

1805 A force of American marines under William Eaton, aided by Greek, Arab, and Turkish mercenaries, captures the city of Derna, in northern Africa, in an attempt to break up pockets of pirates infesting the Mediterranean and the northern Atlantic. It is the first intervention of US troops abroad in history.

1840 The foundation stone is laid in the Palace of Westminster, London, which today “hosts” the British Parliament.

1875 In Greece, Charilaos Trikoupis takes over the government of the country for the first time.

1882 American philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson dies.

1906 The writer, Giorgos Theotokas, was born

1908 Opening ceremony of the 4th modern Olympic Games in London. They last 6 months until October 31 and hold the record for the longest duration. 1,999 athletes and 36 athletes are participating.

1910 The French National Assembly refuses to sign the law giving women the right to vote.

1937 Antonio Gramsci, Italian Marxist philosopher, one of the founders of the Communist Party of Italy, died. (Born 22/1/1891)

1941 World War II: German troops enter Athens, marking the beginning of the Occupation period. The whole world is locked up in their homes. On April 23, four days before Athens fell into the hands of the Germans, the king and the government left for Crete, leaving as a “rear guard” the Deputy Minister of Security of the Silk regime, K. Maniadakis, who also took care of their surrender approximately 2,000 imprisoned and exiled activists, mainly communists, were captured.

1950 Britain officially recognizes the state of Israel
