Venice: With a ticket from today the entrance to the center – Demonstrations of residents

Civil war in Venice. Residents have clashed with police in response to the city council’s decision to impose a ticket on local and foreign visitors who want to visit the city center on a day trip.

“This is not fair. I think Venice is the most beautiful city in the world and so to deprive a person on a low budget the opportunity to come here for an hour or two to enjoy this city is definitely a shame for these tourists,” said a tourist.

The protesters insist that the Municipal Authority turns the city of canals into a Museum or a theme park.

Venice becomes the first city in the world to implement such a pilot measure. The goal is hypertourism.

The experimental phase will continue on selected dates and the €5 ticket will apply for another 28 days until the end of June.

“This system is very important because we are finding a new balance between community residents and day trips. Therefore, we are simply trying to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on 29 specific days and to find a new way to know in advance how many people will arrive in Venice the next day,” said a City Councilor.

In the 60s, it was estimated that the daily visitors reached 50 thousand, including the locals.

Children up to 14 years old, permanent residents, students of the local university, overnight tourists are exempt from the measure.

The fine for anyone who does not have a ticket ranges from 50 to 300 euros.
