• 1607 The first British colonists land in North America, on the shores of what is now Virginia.
• 1825 Ibrahim with 11,000 footmen and 800 horsemen dominates Sphakteria, which was defended by only 1,500 Greeks. Military Minister Anagnostis Papageorgiou (Anagnostaras) and Philhellenic Santaroza, along with 350 other Greeks, fall fighting.
• 1831 The first press law in Greece is published, raising a storm of protests against the governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias.
• 1877 Hermes of Praxiteles is discovered in Olympia by German archaeologists.
• 1902 Manchester United is christened with its current name replacing “Newton Heath”, borrowed from the name of an eastern suburb of Manchester.
• 1933 The Gestapo, the secret police of the Nazi regime, is founded.
• 1937 The German air force bombs and destroys the Basque town of Guernica (Guernica) in Spain. From this tragic event, Pablo Picasso is inspired by the painting “Guernica”.

• 1964 The island of Zanzibar and mainland Tankanika form the state of Tanzania, in West Africa.
• 1986 Nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. This is the worst nuclear accident in the history of mankind, after an explosion in one of the reactors of the nuclear power plant. According to the UN, about 8.4 million people in these three countries have been exposed to radiation, from which an area of 150,000 has been contaminated. square kilometers while many thousands of people left their homes.
• 1987 The Hellenic Left (EAP) is founded and Leonidas Kyrkos takes over as secretary general of the new party.
• 1994 The first multiracial elections in South Africa are being held.
