The case of fan violence and the dozens of arrests made after the murder of the police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis was mentioned today by the Minister of Justice, Giorgos Floridis, who emphasized that “the case is over” adding that “things will go smoothly” .

“A huge success of the Greek police, which is unfairly criticized too many times for being too small or insufficient, in an attempt to undermine its role in Greek society, which is the role of maintaining law and order, i.e. helping to maintain order “, said the minister.

He then emphasized that “it is an investigation that was carried out at many levels, it was carried out with the secrecy that was imposed, nothing was leaked and I think there is a wealth of material, at least what has been made public, from which it appears that now the investigative authorities that they take over the case, that is, they can complete the procedures and those who need to be brought before the court. The investigative procedure carried out so far by the Greek police seems to be exemplary in terms of the documentation of this case. From then on, of course, the investigative authorities will do their own work. The file is now in their hands and we’ll see where they end up.”

“What is certain is that it is a very important response by the Greek police in terms of their abilities and capabilities, at a time when, unjustly, after all, some arrhythmias appeared. Because, sure, it’s not a perfect operation, and no police force in the world has a perfect operation. But it shows in this way that the Greek police have very great potential”, said the minister.

At the same time, George Floridis underlined that: “this framework, the very strict one now, which has to do with the way tickets are issued, which are electronic, which are identified, with high-definition cameras in the stadiums so that don’t miss anything, with harsh penalties when public order incidents occur, i.e. throwing a flare, anything else inside the stadiums. So this framework is already being implemented and a bona fide observer will see that so far, we will see further, but so far it has paid off. In other words, the image of the Greek stadiums, and in fact in this process of the matches of the big teams, is very good until this moment as we speak”.

The government is determined to stick to this framework and its implementation unwaveringly and is not going to back down, said the minister and noted that “the other level, the next level, is what we are following with the case of these arrests, that is, that it is in the within the framework of this policy that the government has now decided, taking advantage of all the steps that have been taken in the previous period, to show that all these phenomena will be dealt with in a radical way. That is, everyone now understands that the case is over in its meaning, any tolerance that existed or the various things that happened there. Well, now things are going to go well, and when I say going well I mean going all the way for those who may appear, somewhere in some other places, to persist in these phenomena of violence.”

In response to a question about whether the culprits who will be identified will be punished no matter how high they are, the minister said: “this is from now on in the hands of justice. It is more than certain that at whatever level it is, responsibilities are identified, I mean criminal responsibilities, they will be the subject of the corresponding judicial judgment.”

To another question about whether a specific group is behind the case, G. Floridis replied: “this is not our business. The police did their job and now the whole case is in the hands of justice. Justice will investigate what needs to be investigated and what must be served, make no doubt, it will be served in whatever it’s about.”

Commenting on the episode between MPs in the Parliament, the Minister of Justice emphasized that “they come from the far right and show their real perceptions towards the democratic state, the Parliament and the world”.

“Actually, this totally reprehensible and extremely sad event is also revealing of those forces that are in there and try to appear to be something other than what they really are. They are carriers of hatred, they are nothing else,” he said.

In addition, he said that “in fact these are groups whose main element is the exercise of violence, the perception of violence and above all lies, i.e. anything that can disturb the smooth functioning of the parliament, but also create false impressions in Greek society , to mislead the world, which in any case feels difficult, is angry about some things that are happening, but to lead it down dangerous paths. These are bearers of hatred, all of them, as well as some who appear as expressions of love and the Christian faith, the same thing with them is, all of them the same thing, they are bearers of hatred.”

In reference to the exhortation of the president of “Hellenic Solution”, Kyriakos Velopoulos, to the MPs who voted for the same-sex couples bill, not to go to church on Easter, the Minister of Justice said: “this is an incitement to hate, it is a incitement to violence. We saw an incident against a member of parliament in Kavala and against some other members of parliament in some other regions by fanatics, who appear to be Christians. These, I have called since long before I got involved with cybernetics, as the seed of the devil. They are not the only Christians. Christianity, as the Archbishop of Greece, Mr. Hieronymos, made sure to remind yesterday, is love. So anyone who departs from this context, which is the foundation of the Christian faith, namely love, then it is obvious that he is not the only Christian. Well, what Mr. Velopoulos says and what all the others of the extreme right arc say is incitement to violence, that is, it is incitement to acts of hatred.”
