The guilt of the police officer who was involved in the fatal traffic accident outside the Parliament, with the victim 23-year-old Jason Lalaounis in March 2021, was proposed by the prosecutor of the seat of the three-member misdemeanor court.
“The defendant’s negligence is grave and cumulative. The bike had no room to maneuver. The vehicle driven by the defendant blocked the entire length of the traffic lane,” the prosecutor said in the police officer’s plea of guilty.
The court’s decision will be announced on Friday morning.
According to ERT, the public prosecutor pleaded guilty to manslaughter, judging that the accused “drove recklessly and without due care” by turning left to enter the Parliament despite the existence of signage, arrows on the road, pointing forced straight path for vehicles.
According to prosecutorthe victim has complicity as he was exceeding the speed limit, but the defendant, with his driving behavior, has the greater percentage of negligence that led to Jason’s death. “There is complicity on the part of the deceased which is taken into account in measuring the sentence of the accused. But the greater percentage of negligence is borne by the defendant, who violated the KOK by making a prohibited turn at the spot,” he said. “The victim was unable to maneuver and fell into the vehicle driven by the defendant,” he added.
The prosecutor emphasized that while there was a legal way for the vehicle to enter the courtyard of the Parliament, i.e. through the Academy, the police officer chose this route acting recklessly. “Yes, but he would lose three minutes. And for three minutes he killed my child» Jason’s father was heard commenting from his place in the audience.
