Natural gas: Greece prices lower than EU after 42% plunge in 2023

The largest decrease in the European Union was recorded in the prices of natural gas for households in the second half of 2023 and fell below the average levels of its 27 countries, according to Eurostat data, while electricity prices in Greece also moved to lower levels than the EU average.

Specifically, the price of natural gas decreased in Greece by 42% compared to the second half of 2022 and stood at 0.0926 euros per kilowatt-hour, while in the EU it decreased marginally on average to 0.01129 euros from 0.1124 euros, respectively. With purchasing power parity, the price in Greece was 0.1129 euros per kilowatt hour, the same as in the EU.

The price of electricity is also lower

The price of electricity for housewives in Greece decreased in the second half of 2023 to 0.2309 euros per kilowatt hour from 0.2438 euros a year ago. In the EU, the price fell more – from €0.3778 to €0.2832 – but was considerably higher than in Greece. At purchasing power parity, the price was €0.2815 versus €0.2814 in the EU.


For non-household users, electricity prices fell in 17 EU countries, with a total decrease of 4.6%.

Electricity and natural gas prices have fallen after soaring in 2022 as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
