Starting today, a ticket of 5 euros will have to be paid by those who make a one-day trip to Venice. The ticket is a world first and according to the mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, it aims to protect the city, which has been declared a world heritage monument, from hyper-tourism.
The ticket is required to enter the historic center of Venice. The city council of Venice announced that 5,500 reservations have been made for April 25, the first day the measure comes into force, which will bring 27,500 euros to the city’s coffers. This excludes those who live and work in the city, overnight tourists, as well as students and children under 14. Random checks will be carried out at five main arrival points and those found without a ticket risk a €50-300 fine.
