US President Joe Biden signed a major $95 billion aid package that extends military and economic support to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. This development comes at a critical time as all these countries are facing serious threats from their enemies and especially Ukraine is facing huge problems in its defense.

Biden emphasized the importance of this package in enhancing both national and global security. “It’s going to make America safer, it’s going to make the world safer,” he said during the signing ceremony. The aid includes a remarkable $61 billion in military aid to Ukraine, which is currently facing continued advances by Russian forces.

The US moved quickly after the bill was passed, with President Biden confirming that new weapons and equipment would be sent to Ukraine “immediately” to help Kiev in its defense efforts. In fact, Biden himself said that in the next few hours Ukraine will start receiving weapons.

The aid package received strong bipartisan support, overcoming months of gridlock in the US Congress. The package was passed with a significant majority in the Senate as well, after a successful vote in the House of Representatives. Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer highlighted the journey toward this achievement, stating, “After more than six months of hard work and many bumps in the road, America is sending a message to the entire world: we will not turn your back on you. back”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the approval of the aid, noting that it “strengthens America’s role as a beacon of democracy and leader of the free world.”

Challenges and concerns for Ukraine

Despite significant support, the long delay in providing this assistance has posed challenges to US efforts to effectively support Ukraine. Continued advances by Russian forces during this period resulted in significant losses for Ukraine. While the immediate provision of one (1) billion dollars in military aid will assist Ukrainian forces, the complexity of the conflict requires continued support and resources to ensure that Ukraine can withstand Russian pressure.

Taiwan, Israel and Palestinians

The approved aid package also provides $17 billion to Israel, as well as $9 billion for civilians suffering in conflict zones around the world, including Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz reacted to news of the vote by thanking members of the US Congress for their “unwavering commitment to Israel’s security”.
