China warned today that an increase in US military support for Taiwan would only increase “the risk of conflict” on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, after the US Congress approved a new $8 billion aid package for the island. .

“I would like to emphasize that strengthening military ties between the US and Taiwan will not bring security to Taiwan,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry.

Wang added that this new aid would “simply heighten tension and increase the risk of conflict on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.”

The US Congress finally approved a massive $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan last Tuesday night.

Taiwan’s president-elect Lai Ching-te, who is due to take office on May 20, said the aid would “strengthen deterrence against authoritarianism” and “save peace”.

US military aid cannot “change the disastrous fate of Taiwan’s independence,” Wang stressed.

“The US should (…) stop arming Taiwan, stop creating new tensions in the Taiwan Strait, and stop endangering peace and stability on both sides of the Strait,” concluded the Chinese spokesperson. ministry.
