The belief that “what we do today will really start to change the conditions decades from today” was expressed by the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis, welcoming the event on the theme “Climate neutral, resilient and smart Central Macedonia”, organized by TEE – Department of Central Macedonia and the Region of Central Macedonia.

“These lead us to new policies, which we have already started and are implementing,” noted Mr. Skylakakis in his videotaped greeting. At the same time, he referred to the major reform that is being carried out in the forests, the reform in construction to end the problem of arbitrary construction, but also other actions, such as those concerning mountain hydrology and the reform of all bodies that manage water. In this way, as he said, the effectiveness of the mechanisms involved will be increased so that they become more capable in the face of these great challenges that the climate crisis and climate change bring us.

In particular, the minister stressed: “there is a need for such reflection conferences because before us we still have very serious and long phases of the green transition, i.e. the effort to reduce greenhouse gases and at the same time we have a climate crisis in full swing, which this will impose very significant prevention costs in order to be able to build this resilience that we are talking about today, but also costs to deal with the natural disasters that we will inevitably have regardless of the prevention costs”.

At the same time, he underlined: “Succeeding in managing both of these efforts requires a very large increase in the effectiveness of our policies not only in Greece but also in Europe and the world and very strict realism in relation to which expenditures we prioritize and why”.

“The challenge is very big, the climate crisis will be with us for the next thirty to forty years,” he added.
