A slight drop in the price of unleaded petrol in Chania has been recorded in recent days, while gas station owners are making an effort to contain prices in view of the Easter holidays, when traffic is expected to be particularly high.

According to what he said in Zarpa Radio 89.6 and Anna Papakonstantinou the president of the Union of Petrol Dealers of the Prefecture of Chania, Yiannis Drakakakis,

“in the last four days there has been a decrease in refinery prices, that is, we have seen a decrease in the price of a barrel and this shows that retail prices have downward trend in the next period. I hope this trend continues and we reach Easter and be below 2 euros and not even close, I hope.

After the developments in Israel, we were seeing that the price of a barrel was on an upward trend and prices were escaping daily. The refineries were raising the price by 1 to 2 cents every day, which meant we would be well over 2.10 to 2.20 euros in unleaded. But in the last few days there has been a decrease from the refineries and this is because both as a Union and as a Federation we protested because the prices of the barrel were stable, there was no reason to increase the refinery prices and so they decreased and as a consequence the retail prices”.

Today, the average selling price of unleaded gasoline in Chania is 1.98 euros per liter while at out-of-town gas stations it exceeds 2 euros per liter, due to transportation costs. Diesel is sold at 1.72 euros per liter.

“Some gas stations were stocked with the previous prices that were higher and because they haven’t made new pickups with low prices, they haven’t lowered their sign price yet,” explained Mr. Drakakakis.

Finally, Mr. Drakakakis expressed the belief that prices for Easter are not expected to show an upward trend.
