Anti-flood – anti-corrosion projects worth five hundred thousand euros were financed by Eurobank in Rhodes, contributing to the effort to restore the natural environment of the areas that burned last year in the great fire of July.

The works, which started at the end of last year, were carried out quickly, and concerned an area of approximately 2,000 acres in the area between the community of Asklipeio and Agios Zacharias in Kiotari, in order to prevent flooding phenomena that would endanger the lives of the residents in the winter .

At that point log dams were constructed and logs placed, as is appropriate in these cases, to strengthen the beds of streams and streams, as the absence of vegetation after the fire had created conditions capable of producing such destructive phenomena.

The burnt pine trunks and branches were used for the projects, in order to combat soil erosion and to hold the seeds for the gradual natural regeneration of the area.

However, in addition to financing the projects, the bank also financed part of the cost of preparing a study for anti-flooding projects throughout the island, which was implemented at the initiative of the Rhodes Hoteliers’ Association.

It is noted that the Ministry of Environment & Energy appointed Eurobank as the contractor for the specific intervention zone of anti-flood – anti-corrosion projects on our island, which will be handed over by the bank’s management, today, Wednesday, April 24, in the presence of the Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis.

The chairman of the board will attend on behalf of the bank. of Eurobank G. P. Zanias and the deputy managing director K. Vassiliou, while the local media were also invited to attend.

There will be a short tour of the project area by Mrs. Vivi Lepida, forester-environmentalist and coordinator of interventions on behalf of Eurobank.

As is known, since last July’s fire, approximately 150,000,000 sq.m. burned on the island. forest area, causing enormous damage on many levels on the island, which had an impact on the economy of both the region and the island more broadly.

It is emphasized that the completion and delivery of the projects follows the measures to support the economy in Rhodes for the rapid restoration of damages and the re-operation of businesses, announced in July 2023 by the bank.

Since the end of July, it had already made it known that it was proceeding with financial support measures for its customers who were damaged by the fire, in support of communication actions for the dynamic restart of tourism on the island and of course in measures to restore the environment.
