• 1792 Artillery captain Claude Joseph Rouget de Lille composes the “Marseillaise” which today is the national anthem of France.
• 1821 Athanasios Diakos meets a horrible death by execution by the Ottomans who had captured him the day before in the Battle of Alamana.
• 1915 The Young Turks arrest 200 prominent Armenians of Constantinople. Beginning of the Armenian Genocide, which claimed the lives of 1.5 million people by 1923.
• 1916 Rebellion against British occupation in Ireland.
• 1918 The first tank battle in the history of military engagements takes place. In Villers-Bretonneux, France, British Mark IV tanks and German A7Vs face off.
•1932 New technologies are put to the service of football for the first time. In the Arsenal v Newcastle (2-1) FA Cup Final match, film is used to prove that Allen’s winning goal was disallowed. The frame in question is published on the front page of the “Daily Mirror” newspaper.
• 1944 The German occupation troops execute 318 inhabitants of the village in Pyrgos (Katranitsa) Kozani, in retaliation for the execution of two German soldiers.
• [1945 At the end of World War II, American forces liberate the Dachau camp.
• 1967 The Soyuz 1 spacecraft crashes on its return to Earth, killing cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov. He is the first person to die during a space mission.
• 1970 The first Chinese satellite is launched.
• 1997 Olympiacos is crowned European basketball champion. In the final of the final four, which took place in Rome, they beat Barcelona 73-58.
• 2004 In a referendum held in 2004 simultaneously in free Cyprus and in the Occupied, the Greek Cypriots rejected the Plan with a percentage of 75.83%. On the other side of the island, “YES” gathered a percentage of 64.9%.
