The battle of the Easter arrow “fires up”. Breeders say that on the way from the barn to the butcher’s shed, the price of lambs almost doubles.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Development by activating the “Easter basket” aims at a price that will not exceed 10 euros. And as if the headache of the cost was not enough, consumers are faced with illegal “baptisms” of thousands of animals from Bulgaria and Romania, which are sold very expensively as Greek, as Star journalist Lefki Georgakis reports in her report.
Easter: The upward trend in the price of lambs
“At least at 14 euros per lamb for the farmers to come out”
“The consumer must reach 13-14 euros in order for the breeder to come out” the breeder Stylianos Armenis, from Nymphopetra, Thessaloniki, told the Star.
The first contracts have already started to fall by 7.5 to 8 euros per kilo at the slaughterhouse, however there are many who say that they will not give herds because it is not in their interest.
In the “battle” of the arrow will fall the “Easter Basket” which aspires to keep prices at 10 euros. However, in butchers, it will “catch” 15 or 16 euros.
“Easter Basket”: Effective from today – What’s included
Already, in the Central Market, the wholesale price reaches 10.80 euros, when last year it did not exceed 9.50 euros.
Thousands of imported lambs are “christened” Greek and sold expensively
Great demand for Easter, much fewer animals compared to previous years and thus the prices of lambs and goats are going uphill. This is exactly the motivation for the circuits, which “baptize” thousands of imported lambs in Greek, in order to sell them to unsuspecting consumers.
