Ticket prices for Italy’s new luxury train are skyrocketing

--

Bookings for Italy’s new luxury train named “La Dolce Vita Orient Express” will be available from next Tuesday. Luxury train enthusiasts will be able to benefit by ‘locking in’ the current price, before it rises further.

Starting prices for overnight trips with this luxurious train have risen significantly since December 2022, starting at 2,000 euros ($2,168) per personuntil November 2023, when the 2,500 euros per person. However, according to an announcement in March, prices have risen even further to 3,500 euros per person per night. This is an impressive increase of 75% in a period of 16 months.

In accordance with CNBCa representative of the Accor company stated that: “Pricing evolves depending on occupancy, season, route and cabin type”.

Although the train has not yet started its operation, the ticket prices remain lower compared to other luxury trains in Europe. For example, ticket prices for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, operated by the Belmond company of the LVMH group, start at 7,060 pounds ($8,925) per passenger for overnight journeys.

Dave Gunger, managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Tourism Economics, explained that the increased prices reflect the continued demand for luxury travel. However, he stressed that the increases are not for profit, but stem from more general rising costs, including staff costs and increased debt servicing requirements.

The La Dolce Vita Orient Express of Accor is to operate nine routes through it Italy, including a coastal trip from Palermo to Rome and another from Rome to the Tuscan community of Montalcino. The choice of the name ‘La Dolce Vita’ reflects the Italian glamor reflected in Federico Fellini’s famous 1960 film, offering passengers a unique experience. Bookings for the train will be available by phone from 2 April and via the company’s website from 24 April.

In addition, Accor plans to launch another train named ‘The Orient Express’, using restored 19th century carriages from the historic ‘Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express’. This train will run various routes in Europe, including the iconic Paris-Istanbul route. It was originally scheduled to launch this year, but is now expected to begin sailing in 2026.
