Rentis: The 67 arrested for the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis are at the prosecutor’s office

All declare themselves innocent and not involved in the crime. The same is repeated by their parents, with the security measures being increased and the television cameras not being able to get close to the entrance.

“The police came to the house and searched it. My son was not at home at the time and went and surrendered himself. My son has told me he is innocent. The police officers didn’t get anything from the searches they did at our house yesterday,” said the mother of one of the defendants.

Among the 67 arrested is the manager of a well-known trapper, as well as the brother of the 18-year-old who had confessed to throwing the naval flare at the deceased policeman.

“This mourning, after the death of Giorgos Lyggeridis, must be turned into an act both for the one who “left” and for those who remain behind. We must review the entire legal regime surrounding the protection of victims of violence and terrorism,” said Michalis Chrysochoidis, Minister of Citizen Protection.

In the voluminous file of 3,000 pages, testimonies, videos and a series of findings about the murder are included. It mentions 158 names, who are alleged to have been involved in organized crime in recent years.

The large police operation for the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis has focused on Ioannina in the last few days, as there was information that one of the moral perpetrators of the crime would flee to Albania. He was spotted in a car while heading towards the border.

As it became known, more than 60 searches have been carried out in houses and 15 in vehicles. A number of evidence including pistols, wooden bats, knives, drugs and clothing linked to the policeman’s murder have been seized.

The floor now belongs to the First Instance Prosecutor, who, after studying the case file, proceeded to bring criminal charges against the arrested. Specifically, 28 charges were brought, of which 12 are of a criminal nature.

Five people are accused of running a criminal organization, while the rest are accused of arson, moral complicity in murder and complicity in murder, among others.
