On April 22, 1941, the destroyer “HYDRA” was heavily attacked by German planes while sailing near the Saronic island of Lagousa.

One hour after the attack, the destroyer sank, taking the captain, Vice Captain Theodoros Pezopoulos, 3 officers, 11 petty officers and 26 sailors to the bottom.

Yesterday, a commemorative event was held for the sinking of the destroyer by the Municipality of Aegina, at the sinking point, in the sea area north of the island.

As part of the event, wreaths were thrown at the sinking point.

The sinking of HYDRA

The destroyer HYDRA had been ordered to sail from the area of ​​the Isthmus of Corinth where it was located, towards Phleves, to meet the munitions-laden merchant ship MARIMESK.

The Hydra together with the Papanikolis submarine would escort and protect the trade to Souda and then go to Alexandria from where they would continue their war action.

During its voyage, the destroyer was bombed by about 70 Junkers 87 Stuka planes, causing it to sink next to Lagos.

During the raid, 42 of the 156 crew members were killed. Four officers (the captain Th. Pezopoulos, the governor L. Vlachavas, the doctor and a staff member), eleven non-commissioned officers and twenty-seven sailors.
