Alexandroupolis welcomed the Olympic Flame with honors and emotion

On the afternoon of Monday, April 22, the Olympic Flame arrived in Alexandroupoli, where it will spend the night, at the end of the 7th day of the Olympic Torch Relay for the “Paris 2024” Olympic Games.

The altar under the city’s Lighthouse was lit by Olympic and World Javelin Champion Kostas Gatsioudis, who hails from Didymoteicho.

The torchbearers who carried the Olympic Flame from the junction of the old Hospital to the center of Alexandroupolis were the World Tae Kwon Do Champion Morfo Drosidou, the European Cup Winner and Greek Basketball Champion Giorgos Valavanidis, the Biopathologist, Associate Professor of Medical Microbiology, APTH Georgia Gyula and the athlete of the association for the disabled Kotinos and student of the Alexandroupoli Special School Marina Tsomou.

In the Lighthouse square, after the lighting of the altar, the anthem of the Olympic Games and the raising of the Olympic flag followed, the National Anthem of France and the raising of the French flag, and the Greek National Anthem and the raising of the Greek flag.

This was followed by greetings from the Mayor of Alexandroupolis, Yiannis Zamboukis, the Consul of France in Thessaloniki, Jean-Luc Laveau, and the President of the Olympic Torch Relay, Athanasios Vassiliadis.

The event closed with a choreography, by students of the Dance School Danse Passion – Sonia Orea and the Greek-French Friendship Association “The House of Antoinette” and the musical program by the composer and songwriter Monica Campasele.
