In view of the Easter holidays, chocolate and its derivatives will have their due.

Compared to last year, however, consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as the price of cocoa and cocoa mass has increased by 45%-50%. This increase is due to climate change, the aging of cocoa trees and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which caused very heavy rains in the main cocoa-producing countries, resulting in the black pod disease that destroyed part of the crops.

The increase in the price of cocoa naturally also affected Greece, increasing the prices of chocolate sweets. According to the above data, in the Greek Easter market a decorated chocolate egg will cost around €20, chocolate candies €10 per kilo and bunnies €15 compared to €12 last year. The king of the Easter table, the bun, will cost €16.50 per piece with chocolate filling, while the plain one will cost €8.90.

Of course, these prices are indicative as confectioners try to keep quality and price at normal levels. And in the event that consumers decide to make their own Easter chocolate treats, compared to last year, the money they will have available will be more, thus justifying the increase in the price of these products from confectioners.
