  • 215 BC. – A temple dedicated to Venus is erected on the Capitoline Hill, in memory of the defeat of the Romans in the battle of Lake Trasimene.
  • 1014 – Battle of Clodarf: King of Ireland Brian Boru defeats the Viking invaders, but is killed in battle.
  • 1016 – Edmund the Iron Side succeeds his father, Æthelred of Wessex, as King of England.
  • 1348 – On St. George’s Day, King Edward III of England announces the establishment of the Order of the Pericnemis.
  • 1635 – The Boston Latin School, the first public school in the USA, is founded in Boston.
  • 1661 – Charles II is crowned King of England, Scotland and Ireland in Westminster Abbey.
  • 1897 – The unfortunate Battle of Pharsala takes place for the Greek army, one of the most important battles of the Greek-Turkish War of 1897.
  • 1918 – World War I: the British Royal Navy raids in an attempt to blockade the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebruge.
  • 1920 – The Grand National Assembly of Turkey is established in Ankara, which denounces the government of Sultan Muhammad VI and announces the preparation of a temporary constitution.
  • 1927 – Cardiff City defeat Arsenal in the FA Cup final in football. This is the first time that the FA Cup has been won by a team not based in England.
  • 1941 – World War II: the Greek government and King George II of Greece leave Athens before the Wehrmacht invades.
  • 1944 – German Occupation: The German invaders invade the Kozani Towers (then Katranitsa) and set fire to the village. Many villagers were burned alive, others were killed in cold blood, girls were raped and the village burned to the ground. The victims of the Pyrgo holocaust amount to 368 (mostly women and children). This was the second largest holocaust by the Germans after that of Kalavryta.
  • 1967 – Soyuz 1 launches into orbit carrying cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, who is killed on re-entry to Earth.
  • 1990 – Namibia becomes the 160th member of the U.N. and 50th member of the British Commonwealth.
  • 1993 – The people of Eritrea vote in a referendum for their independence from Ethiopia.
  • 2005 – Co-founder Joed Kerim publishes the first video on YouTube, entitled “Me at the zoo”.[1]
  • 2010 – Greece becomes the first country of the E.U. which appeals to the International Monetary Fund. The Greek government submitted an application for bilateral loans from the rest of the Eurozone Member States that have a common currency, the euro. Continuation of this was the conclusion of the loan facility agreement in the amount of 80,000,000,000 euros on May 8, 2010.
