Gusty winds, mud showers and African dust are the main features of the weather today Tuesday, as the dust transport that has been underway since Monday peaks.

Along with the African dust, a significant increase in temperature is expected today, while the winds will blow east-southeast reaching 8 Beaufort, with gusts even at 9 Beaufort in the Aegean.

There will be mud showers in the central areas, dust in the central and northern areas, cloudy skies, but also 30 degrees Celsius in northern Crete, while in Florina the thermometer will not exceed 12 degrees.

As mentioned in his post by the director of the EMY Thodoris Kolidas, the large temperature difference between North-West Greece and the South Island regions is not unprecedented and the 30 days that are expected in Crete will not be many while “an important role will be played again by the locally enhanced downdrafts Foen-type winds’.

On Wednesday, the westerly wind will begin to push the dust towards the Dodecanese more progressively further east, ensuring a clearer atmosphere for Thursday and Friday.

The post of Thodoris Kolidas:

“NORTH vs SOUTH – TEMPERATURE CONTRASTS

Many times we have seen similar differences or even greater differences of 16°C between North-West Greece and Southern Island areas, especially in the cases where strong downward southerly winds prevail. Of course we are not referring to something “unprecedented”, such as e.g. for today’s 28 °C in Heraklion and 11 to 12 °C in the northwest.

Tomorrow Tuesday we may catch even higher prices (the 30s), but it won’t be much, as reported in the press. These values will be limited mainly in Crete, or where the locally strengthened downwinds of the Foen type will again play an important role. Foehn_Winds
