Rentis: In Evelpidon, those arrested for the Lyggeridis murder

Yesterday’s developments were stormy in the case of the murder of the 31-year-old police officer, Giorgos Lyggeridis outside the “Melina Merkouri” stadium in Rentis in December 2023.

After investigations by the Attica security forces which were carried out under the utmost secrecy, on Monday morning the police carried out an extensive operation in Athens and the province, arresting at least 60 people.

The file that was formed concerns 165 people and exceeds 5,000 pages.

The plan of EL.AS. for the “excision” of the criminal organization that is allegedly behind the murder of the police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis but also behind about 13 other cases of sports violence, reminds of the case filed against Golden Dawn executives.

Today, in the morning, the more than 60 arrested will be transferred to Evelpidon where they will be brought before the prosecutor, in order to be charged with both felony and misdemeanor charges.

Of the more than 64 people who have been arrested, the experienced Attica security officers have identified many of them in 11-12 cases of fan violence.

However, the “very tough core of hooligans”, the leading core, amounts to about 20 people. According to police sources 5 people are charged as moral perpetrators of the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis.

According to the authorities the five “heads” are:

• Senior member of Thira 7. This person was spotted yesterday afternoon in a cafe in Ioannina with a friend of his. He had 5,000 euros and 4 mobile phones in his possession and the authorities do not rule out that he was trying to escape to Albania.
• Another person accused of being a moral perpetrator is the well-known trapper manager. When he had been examined by the authorities he had said: “I carried a banner and left.”
• A person nicknamed “Romanos”, who is another one of those accused of moral turpitude. On 03/04 he was one of the people who participated in a fight outside “Karaiskakis”, with other Olympiacos fans.
• A 31 year old. One of the two weapons found in the authorities’ investigations was found in his possession.
• Finally, another 31-year-old described as “the tough guy in the stands”. This is an organized fan in the Olympiakos association in Western Attica.

Information indicates that in the case file there are distinct roles, such as leaders, coordinators, team leaders and members of the executive arm.

Key is the “leader” who was arrested in Ioannina

Police began to analyze the profile of a 40-year-old man, who was reported to be “in command” of a violent group of fans. The police found him about 24 hours ago in Ioannina. From monitoring him, they knew that he was not in Athens and had taken care to take their measures, as there was a fear that he might leave the country.

When the police stopped him, they found more than 5,000 euros. It is believed that he had already learned that the cordon around him had begun to tighten some time ago and that he might be attempting to disappear with cash on him.

The valuable information they gathered from a video-document taken by a fan in the stands, as well as from high-resolution photographs, played an important role in starting to unravel the tangle in the case of the Lyggeridis murder. clarity, while the forensic laboratories “spoke” of ordnance that had been identified outside the stadium in Rentis and from the stadium’s toilets, where the perpetrators had set fire to clothes in order to hide their traces.

“Some evidence had to be analyzed, so that the involvement of some in more than one category emerged. Many of them are marked. But now they have a problem, because the charge is for a criminal organization”, said Giorgos Kalliakmanis, speaking to ANT1 and the show “Kalimera Greece” for the dozens of arrests for the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis.

As he said, “around 60 people were leaders and deputy leaders. And the terrible thing is that, after the murder, they are heard saying: we accomplished our goal, we have a dead copThe”.

The president of the Police Officers of South-Eastern Attica believes that, “some people take advantage of these children to do other jobs. We see these kids with the aggression doing hookups and drug dealing.”

And when asked why these cases are not closed, he answered that, “maybe there was a phobia, in knowing that ‘we won’t get there’.” Businessmen support parties, businessmen have nothing to do with it, some actors take advantage of these children to do their jobs” and he concluded that, “we have to escape that we will reach persons who are high, we will not get there, it is some others who take advantage”.
