The multi-month investigation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in Sports Venues for what took place on December 7, 2023 outside the “Melina Merkouri” indoor stadium in Rentis and the fatal wounding of 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis with a naval flare ended in a police sweep operation.
During the operation – according to police sources – 60 people have been arrested so far, while the file that has been filed includes 158 names that relate not only to the fatal wounding of the police officer but also to other criminal acts.

The father of the MAT police officer, moved, reported to his child’s colleagues.
“I lost a son, a hero, yes, but through that son I gained another family his platoon, they supported me and all of you, I can’t say, but all those kids back there, the ones who pulled everything they fought with my son, they will continue to fight, not that there won’t be another Giorgos”.
As part of the operation, dozens of investigations were carried out, in the presence of prosecutors and judicial officials, while, according to police sources, during their investigation, they collected data from phone taps, DNA tests, video footage and witness statements.
The leader of EL.AS, Dimitrios Mallios, stated: “58 searches have been carried out in houses and 15 in vehicles, and a number of persuasive items such as pistols, wooden clubs, knives, drugs, clothing, digital media and others have been confiscated.”
“They entered my house at half past 5:30, I say what happened, she tells me motionless, hands up. They wouldn’t let us in the room. At seven o’clock they brought the child here (GADA), they didn’t tell us anything, nor did they show us anything with papers. They searched the house, they found nothing,” said the mother of one of the arrested.
According to information, among those arrested are the minor brother of the 18-year-old who has been remanded in custody for the murder, as well as the manager of a well-known trapper.
“Let us trust the women and men of ELAS and the representatives of the Greek justice system. Many people work on too many cases. Such phenomena cannot be tolerated, specific aspects of the case cannot be known by the government”, noted the government representative, Pavlos Marinakis.

The 31-year-old MAT police officer passed away on December 27 after 20 days of hospitalization. The serious injury from a naval flare during incidents that took place outside the “Melina Merkouri” stadium in Rentis, was ultimately fatal for his life. For the case, an 18-year-old man has been temporarily detained since the middle of last December, who admitted in his apology that he threw a naval flare that night and stated that if the police officer was injured by it, he apologizes as he did not want to cause him harm.
The dozens arrested are expected to be brought to the competent prosecutor’s office tomorrow.
