More than 80 earthquakes, the largest of which had a magnitude of 6.3, have been recorded in the past eight hours in Taiwan by the island’s weather service.

The epicenter is located in Hualien Province, on the eastern tip of the island. Seismic activity has been on the rise since the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3 and killed 14 people.

According to the fire department in Hualien, a hotel that had already suffered significant damage from the April 3 earthquake and had been evacuated is on standby.

In Taiwan, earthquakes are common, as the island is located near the point where two tectonic plates meet. In September 1999, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in the worst disaster in Taiwan’s modern history.
