Marinakis: “There is talent in our country, the trophy is dedicated to all Greeks”
Vangelis Marinakis, speaking to Cosmote TV, focused on the very good work and talent that exists in the Olympiakos academy.
“We are very happy. Our dream was a European cup and today is the first time a Greek team has lifted the youth Champions League.
All these years we have seen what work is being done in the academies and as I told the children after the game with Inter, now we can believe that we are a very good team and we can go forward. We have no one to fear. We saw it in the semi-final today as well, where Olympiacos was the best team in Europe by far.
Work has been going on for years at a high professional level in our academy. We are very happy about it. We have great talents, which we hope will write their own story in the years to come. I remind you of Panos Retsos, who was the most expensive sale of a Greek by a Greek team in history. What matters is that the kid came from our academy, grew up with us and we see that he excels. This is the great benefit, because we are talking about the children, the Greek children who have talent and can star all over the world.
We definitely see 3-4 guys immediately in the first team. In Europe and around the world, 18-19-year-olds are no longer young, but excel in the big teams. The mentality that they are too young is not true. We have seen it in the Premier League. We brought in a 19-year-old kid from Brazil and now he’s excelling in the Premier League (mr. Murillo). We must give opportunities to young children to write their own history.
I told them “it’s good that you are here and give us joy”. The day before yesterday in Istanbul, I told the men that “you followed the young people and started giving us joy too. You were a little late, but you made history in the City”. We believe in men the same. We have proven to date that we can go all the way.
What matters is that what happened today, this great victory, this trophy is very good for Greece. We dedicate it to all Greeks.”
