In the last few hours, the authorities have made dozens of arrests of people allegedly involved in the murder of the 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis, in the context of a large police operation that is still ongoing since Sunday evening (21/4), by the Sub-Directorate Dealing with Violence in Sports Venues in collaboration with other services of the Hellenic Sports Authority.
Throughout the previous period, the experienced police officers of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in Sports Fields, collected statements and material from the security cameras, using any information that would reach the perpetrators. According to information, 57 spontaneous arrests have been made as part of the preliminary investigation.
Among those arrested are the brother of the 18-year-old and the trapper manager
It is noted that the investigation by the authorities concerns both the incidents that took place outside the stadium in Rentis, and the murder of the 31-year-old policeman, as well as at least 10 more cases of fan violence. The case file that has been filed has more than 158 defendants.
At the same time, searches have been carried out in houses and cars, as well as in places where the fans were associated. They all face charges of, among other things, participation in a criminal organization. From the searches in their homes, very useful information has emerged for the police, which will enable them to identify their presence both outside the stadium where the murder of 31-year-old Giorgos Lyggeridis took place, as well as in stadiums in the province where they were involved in wild episodes.
According to information, among those arrested is the brother of the 18-year-old who allegedly threw the naval flare, which “hit” the deceased policeman, while two arrests involve people from the province.
Another arrest concerns the manager of a well-known trapper, whose name was targeted by the authorities from the very beginning.

“A large-scale operation by the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in the sports grounds of the Attica Security Directorate has been in full progress since the early hours of this morning to arrest people involved in the incident of the fatal injury of a police officer on 7-12-2023 at a sports event in Renti. So far, dozens of people have been brought in as well as a large number of searches in homes and vehicles, while various items of evidence have been seized.”
It is recalled that the 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis, who was seriously injured by a naval flare during the incidents that took place outside the “Melina Merkouri” stadium in Rentis, succumbed to his injuries on December 27, in the ICU of the General State Hospital of Nice, where he was hospitalized for 20 days.
The doctors had proceeded to amputate his leg, which was hit by the naval flare.
