Murder of George Lyggeridis: 59 arrests

The 59 face the additional charge of attempted murder in agreement with their lawyers arrested for the murderous attack on Rentis, at his expense Giorgos Lyggeridis, who are detained in GADA and will be brought to the sports prosecutor tomorrow morning. The charge concerns an attack reported by another police officer on the fateful night of December 7. In other words, this accusation concerns the fact that these individuals, in addition to the confessed young murderer, caused incidents at the expense of MAT police officers.

According to the same sources, the 59 are the core of the organization, there are still 100 people accused of broader participation in a criminal organization, while they face charges for other criminal acts.

It is noted that the operation of the Sports Violence Department of the General Police Directorate of Athens is ongoing, with the police operating in various areas of the stadium and mainly in houses and cars of fans in western Athens.

It is recalled that the 31-year-old policeman passed away on December 27, after a tough battle that he fought for 20 days in the ICU, following a serious injury to his thigh from a naval flare that he had received during the bloody incidents outside the stadium ” Melina Merkouri” in Rentis.

A mother of one of the arrested spoke to the cameras. “They entered my house at 5:30, they didn’t say anything to me. They didn’t show any papers either. They searched the house but I didn’t find anything,” as stated in the relevant MEGA report.

Father of George Lyggeridis: “There are laws, let them be punished, I don’t want to see them”

The policeman’s father also spoke to the television cameras.

“It is a difficult day. Many things can be fixed when they want. There are laws, let them be punished. I don’t want to face them, I don’t want to see them, I just want to be punished.”

ELAS’ announcement about the operation

Earlier today, in the announcement issued by ELAS regarding the operation, the following was mentioned: “A large-scale operation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in the sports grounds of the Attica Security Directorate has been in full progress since the early hours of this morning to arrest people involved in incident of fatal injury to a police officer on 7-12-2023 at a sports event in Renti. So far, dozens of people have been brought in as well as a large number of searches in homes and vehicles, while various items of evidence have been seized.”

Pavlos Marinakis for the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis: Such cases require time, we must trust ELAS and the Justice

The government representative, Pavlos Marinakis, was asked about the matter at noon on Monday, in a briefing for political editors, replying that such cases take time, that the government is not involved since they concern the Greek Police and the Judiciary, and that he believes that there will be announcements soon from ELAS.

Specifically answering a related question, Mr. Marinakis clarified that the murder was the final straw for Greek society for the incidents of violence that took place mainly in football stadiums.
