More than 50 arrests have been made by the men of the Combating Violence in the Sports Fields for the death of Giorgos Lyggeridis.

A major police operation of the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in Sports Venues by the Hellenic Police has started since the early hours of Monday, resulting in the arrest of more than 50 people for the murderous attack with a naval flare against the 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis on December 7, 2023. outside the closed gym in Rentis.

The operation is in full swing and detailed announcements are now expected from the Greek Police about the arrested (according to information, around 60 people are wanted in total), who are accused, among other things, of participating in a criminal organization, while in the case file that has formed included over 150 people.

As part of the operation, a large number of searches have been carried out in homes and vehicles, from which various items of evidence have been seized. The investigation by the Authorities concerns both the case of the death of the young policeman outside the stadium in Rentis and other incidents of fan incidents.

Among those arrested are three leading members of a certain Thira of Olympiakos fans. These individuals allegedly gave orders and distributed the roles in this criminal organization that the Police is investigating, as reported by Mina Karamitrou in OPEN. The three specific arrestees have also concerned the Authorities and the Directorate for Combating Sports Violence many times.

“Most of those arrested are leading members of links”

This is a new case file, with a total of 158 defendants, concerning moral complicity in the murder of the 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis and the criminal organization involved in at least 10, perhaps more, incidents of violence and attacks in sports meetings. Dozens have evolved home surveys, various persuasions have been seized, important are the evidence that has emerged from the declassification of communications as well as suspect connections and DNA results, as well as from people who wanted to be in the witness protection program. There are several findings such as clothing found in the homes of the arrested and identified with the videos of the attacks, but DNA was also identified from burnt clothes found in the toilets of the closed gym, while credentials for matches of the Super League of a certain football team were also identified.

According to SKAI police sources, most of the arrested are leading members of these links, with some of them having participated in incidents even 16 years ago. According to police sources, the leaders, including the 27-year-old manager Trapper), the organizers (the deputy leaders), the group leaders, the transmitters of orders and actions, the weapons storekeepers and the people who made up the strike groups have been arrested.

We are talking about leaders of the leading groups of the links who apparently were the ones who organized the incidents. The ELAS sources typically state that they themselves recruited young people from associations that, as traveling armies, participated in incidents, attacks and other criminal actions. The “most capable” were selected for participation in more serious crimes, possibly crimes involving the Greek mafia.
