Lyggeridis murder: Criminal organization with military hierarchy in the hands of ELAS

In a “sweep operation”, following a four-month investigation, authorities raided homes and arrested dozens of suspects for participating in a criminal organization and instigating incidents of sports violence. Among those arrested for the murder of 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis with a flare in Rentis is the man who gave the order for the murderous attack.

This is a “removal” of the recruitment pool of criminal groups, police officers told SKAI and Panagiotis Spyropoulos. At least 57 arrests have been made in the operation which has been ongoing since morning, in which the sub-directorate to deal with violence in sports venues.

This is a new case file, with a total of 158 defendants, concerning moral complicity in the murder of the 31-year-old police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis and the criminal organization involved in at least 10, perhaps more, incidents of violence and attacks in sports meetings.

According to police sources, most of those arrested are leading members of these links, with some of them having participated in incidents even 16 years ago. As far as the activity of the specific criminal organization is concerned, apparently the incidents in which the “armies” had participated were in Ioannina, Volos, Attica, Malakasa, Ilion, New Philadelphia, Crete but and Tripoli. “What happened at the closed gym ‘Melina Merkouri’ according to competent officers was retaliation for what happened four days earlier in Volos, with the attacks of police forces.
