Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited in the morning the Central Vegetable Market of Athens in Agios Ioannis Rentis.

The Prime Minister spoke to traders about the course of prices, the operation of the supply chain and the investments that have been made in the area of storage and transport of goods, for the benefit of consumers as well.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was accompanied by the Minister of Development Kostas Skrekas, was also informed about the great interest that exists abroad for Greek products and about the qualitative advantages that Greek exports have in order to increase their penetration and share in markets outside Greece.

After the completion of his visit, the Prime Minister emphasized: “This is not the first time I have visited the Central Market of Athens here in Rentis and it will not be the last. At this juncture, these visits take on a special importance, as the effort continues so that Greek consumers can enjoy quality products at reasonable prices.

As the Minister said, the “Godfather’s Basket” starts today, while in a few days from now the “Easter Basket” will also start. We strive, with strict controls on the market and always in consultation with the entire supply chain, to be able to offer consumers products that will be at prices corresponding to or even lower than last year’s.

And I am already happy to find that in a number of products, vegetables and fruits, we have prices that are lower than last year. And, of course, let me emphasize that the better the supply chain works, the more our suppliers invest in logistics infrastructure, the more this will ultimately result in better prices for our consumers.

We have said many times that the fight against accuracy is a constant fight. But for the first time, we have encouraging signs that the persistent food inflation seems to be beginning to abate. And, as I said, we already have price drops on several products, which after all is what we want in order to relieve the average household and of course let us all spend the Easter holidays with a smile and enjoying the best possible prices for the typical Easter products products”.

The Minister of Development Kostas Skrekas said: “The government’s effort to maintain affordable prices for households in view of the Easter table continues. We are not complacent. We see that gradually the prices of fruit and vegetable products have started to decline. Of course, the effort continues.

Today begins the “Godfather’s and Godmother’s Basket”, where we will give the possibility, with the included products, to the godparents to make our children happy during the Easter holidays.

On Wednesday, the day after tomorrow, the “Basket” for the Easter holiday table will also start, which will include lamb, bun and of course chocolate eggs, so that we can ensure affordable prices. Prices for lamb and goat, which will be the same or even lower in the “Basket”, compared to the corresponding Easter period last year.

The CEO of the Central Markets and Fisheries Organization, Apostolos Apostolakos, stated that “there is great availability and full sufficiency. Businesses are doing a lot of preparation so that at Easter there will be affordable products at all price levels, compared to last year as well as to European levels.”
