The first shower of shooting stars of Spring will take place today, Monday, and if the weather permits, a large number of people will have the opportunity to enjoy the impressive phenomenon.
These are the Lyrids, the first shower of falling stars (shooting stars) of Spring that lasts from April 16th to April 26th and usually peaks on April 22nd.
The Lyrids are named after the constellation Lyra in which their radiant point is located. Radiant point is the point in the sky from which the transiting stars appear to originate and radially traverse the celestial sphere.
Defects are very small objects ranging in size from a few millimeters to a few meters. They enter the atmosphere at a speed of 50 to 100 Km/s. In the case of the Lyrids, the speed of entry into the atmosphere is 48 Km/s. Due to the friction with the atmospheric gases, a high temperature develops which causes their ionization. When a gas is ionized it emits light.
