An ELAS operation has been ongoing since the morning with dozens of arrests of people allegedly related to the death of police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis who died after being seriously injured by a naval flare thrown by hooligans from the Melina Merkouri stadium in Rentis.

ELAS’ announcement about the business:

“A large-scale operation by the Sub-Directorate for Combating Violence in the sports grounds of the Attica Security Directorate has been in full progress since the early hours of this morning to arrest people involved in the incident of the fatal injury of a police officer on 7-12-2023 at a sports event in Renti. So far, dozens of people have been brought in as well as a large number of searches in homes and vehicles, while various items of evidence have been seized.”

Although the number of arrests has not yet been clarified, according to reports they number in the dozens, with the police simultaneously conducting a search of various premises and houses to identify further evidence.

According to information, the charges that those arrested are going to face relate to a criminal organization.

Giorgos Lyggeridis passed away on December 27, after a tough battle that he fought for 20 days, following his serious injury.

The 31-year-old had received a naval flare in the incidents that took place in Rentis’ closed, during the “eternal” derby, Olympiacos – Panathinaikos, for the League Cup.
