THE Tesla dropped the price of driver assistance software Full Self-Driving (FSD) to $8,000 from $12,000 in the US, as the CEO Elon Musk doubles down on self-driving technology. Musk is betting that the technology will become a “reservoir” of cash for the world’s most valuable automaker. But for years it has fallen short of the goal of self-driving capability, with the technology coming under increasing regulatory and legal scrutiny.

Musk earlier in April said Tesla would unveil its robotaxi on August 8, after Reuters reported that Tesla had scrapped its cheap, mass-market car in favor of the robotaxi. According to Tesla’s website, customers can now pay $8,000 for the FSD feature or sign up to use it for $99 a month. Tesla recently lowered the US monthly subscription price for the feature from $199, while giving every Tesla customer a free month of the software.

The automaker has also cut prices across its range of cars in major markets. Facing falling sales and an intensifying price war for electric vehicles, it has cut prices by nearly $2,000 across its range in China, in line with price cuts in the United States.
