Katerina Geronikolou: “I won the life I want to live”

With a bright, beautiful face, but also a strong ecological consciousness, Katerina Geronikolou talks to Beauté about all the things that make her special in our hearts. Immovable, always creative, she went through this season with a suitcase in her hand, with continuous filming and performances outside of Athens. After the tour of the show “Molotov Vodka”, the famous show of Mimi Denisis “From Smyrna Thessaloniki”, which was presented in Thessaloniki and Cyprus, and the so tender cinematographic “Kourabiedes apo shnivo”, directed by her beloved Yannis Tsimitselis, Katerina Geronikolou is now placing another bet, this time on television. It’s Open’s new TV series “Like a Lie”, where she stars in a role that fits her like a glove.

Environmental concerns

Last year you wrote on your Instagram that “the planet is screaming”. Are you worried about his future?

“We should all be worried and be on hot coals. Unless we want in a hundred years, or even less, the people who will live on earth to be in a state of terror. Anyone who doesn’t care about the planet means they don’t care about the continuity of our species. If you are not an inhuman, you must understand that the planet is screaming and sending SOS messages.”

What are you doing to protect the planet?

“I think there is individual responsibility, but it is not the only one. On a personal level, if I don’t recycle even a plastic bottle, I get sad and stressed. If I’m somewhere I can’t recycle, I feel bad. That’s why as soon as electric cars came out, I bought an electric car, 100%. I haven’t used petrol for two years. I’m also interested in buying brands that are eco-conscious, airlines that have fewer entries, generally being as careful as I can.”

The responsibility of industries and government institutions?

“Industries and companies are the big issue. But we, too, with overconsumption, with the type of packaging we buy, are certainly a small lever. The big levers will make their mark so that our planet continues to be a home and not a place of terror and insecurity. Both the government and the local government are responsible for recycling properly. But if we all don’t do what we’ve been told we should do, then we live in absolute anarchy. I don’t like nepotism and “it’s okay”. This may have been true a century ago. Today we have no more room.” says Katerina Geronikolou in BEAUTÉ magazine.

Professional review

Since the reason is lies, tell us about the new TV series “Like a lie”, in which you star at the Open.

“It’s a very nice story. A romantic comedy in a daily series of a few episodes, which will be completed in the summer, directed by Stavros Potamaris. It is based on a Turkish TV hit. The protagonist is a little girl, who grows up without his mother, who has abandoned him, with the lie that his mom is in another country and cannot be near her. So when the knot comes to an end, her father – played by Nikos Polyderopoulos – will be forced to show her a fake, “rented” mom, played by me. Thus begins this tender, touching story.”

Making an artistic assessment of the season what would you say?

“This year was full of theater and a successful film that meant a lot to me, “Snowdrops”. The comments we received, primarily from Yiannis Tsimitselis as director and myself secondly, were very moving. I was lucky enough to be awarded by the directors of Northern Greece for my career and my contribution to cinema and they told me that this film brought families back to cinemas. The public’s appetite for films involving all members of the family has opened up,” says the actress.

Today’s society

Why does society need this today?

Because the head of the family is always anxious to offer his children beautiful moments when they are out of school and to have fun at the same time. There is the playground solution which is for relaxation, but not entertainment. Believe
that this particular film offered quality time to both parents and children, many meanings, about what family means: Love is the connective tissue that can exist in blood ties and not. I may not have
my own children, but I have godchildren and I worry about them, about what they will be like when they grow up, if they will feel the need to cultivate, to be educated, to try to become better people.

What is the main problem you see in the younger generations?

“Their relationship with the computer or mobile screen is terrifying. Their activities, compared to what we had and even more so the previous generation, are very lonely. Now we are in the era where everything is considered easy if you are a youtuber. Young people are not interested in giving their best. They are just processors. Friends who own small businesses and hire new students also tell me that they don’t care about being good at what they do.”

Dreams & future plans

Are you living the life you dreamed of?

“When I was 18 and until I was 25, I went through a period of great introspection, where I was trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do. I entered law school and completed it, not liking it. I studied journalism, which I liked, I entered the profession, but I was not lucky. Then I went to drama school, because the theater was always my place of escape. We went with my mother and sister every week. My mother was a theater lover and she made me too. I struggled and suffered a lot until I found my way, so after all these years, I can say today that I won the life I want to live.”

What are your plans for the summer?

“We will continue the “Molotov Vodka”, which will be presented, among others, in Veakeio in June. Also, the possibility of returning “From Smyrni Saloniki” for a few selected performances due to its great success is being considered. Next season I will be at the Lambeti theater in a completely subversive show. What I can say for now is that you will be pleasantly surprised,” emphasizes Katerina Geronikolou.
