The prices of basic products remain high, with precision increasingly choking consumers amid other increases. These increases have been felt by each of us for a long time, despite the implementation of zero VAT in several categories of products.

Based on the findings of the consumer service, only in the month of February fresh fish saw an increase of 5.5%, 2.9% oil, flour and soft drinks 1.8%.

A corresponding decrease was observed in products such as sugar (3.8%), cold meats (3.1%) and frozen fish (3.2%).

The noticeable difference can be seen through the prices – number of products – from last year to this year’s March.

Based on the consumer service’s essential goods observatory, a 300 gram package of ham was at 3 euros and 93 cents while last March it was at 3.88. The price of a 400 gram slice of feta is 7 euros and 6 cents compared to 6 euros and 29 cents last March.

Significant increases were also recorded in the prices of pulses such as lentils at 19 cents and flour with a difference of 9 cents. Olive oil leads the way in the increases, the price of which is on fire after doubling within a year.

Products such as strained yogurt and cheese had small decreases within 12 months. The zero VAT rate has been imposed on bread, milk, eggs, baby food, feminine hygiene products, baby and adult diapers, sugar, coffee, meat and vegetables.

However, the research carried out by the newspaper “Phileleftheros” makes an impression. Specifically, 35 products were purchased with a cost of €230.24, while last year, the same 35 products, in the same quantities and brand, cost €167.99. A difference of 62 euros and 25 cents.
