• 1519 The Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés establishes a settlement in Veracruz (Mexico).
• 1821 During the Greek Revolution, the Battle of Alamana takes place.
• 1822 Greek revolution: its holocaust takes place in the revolted Naoussa.
• 1912 “Pravda”, the official organ of the later CPSU, begins to be published in St. Petersburg.
• 1915 Chemical weapons are used for the first time on the battlefield. At the Battle of Ypres, Belgium, during World War I, German forces fire cylinders of chlorine gas, killing 5,000 French soldiers.
