Chania | We went public: “It’s the same as we survive” say the producers – Consumers are looking for lower prices against precision

Consumers are looking for affordable prices in the public market in Chania. The zarpanews.grvisited the Thursday market in the morning in Nea Chora and talked with citizens and producers.

According to the report, consumers appear satisfied with the prices in the public market, trying to “digest” that accuracy exists everywhere, while at the same time declaring that they prefer local products.

For their part, the producers ask for the assistance of the state in the general problems plaguing the primary sector. Among other things, they talk about the high cost of production, the increase in the cost of labor, which is hard to find, while they say that they are trying to keep prices down so that people will shop. As they typically say, “as many as survive”.

Ms. Anna Papadopoulouproducer from Apokoronas stated:

“We try as much as we can to keep the prices of our products low so that people can reach them. Everything is increasing but wages are not increasing. So we, as producers, try to do the best for the world. The prices in the supermarkets have gotten out of hand and people are now returning to the street food. The daily wages of the workers are increasing every day” characteristically says Mrs. Papadopoulou while pointing out that no labor available.

“We’re not dating”

In the meantime, Katerina Voutsaki, a producer in the Kolymvari region, emphasized that people prefer local products, while in relation to food supermarkets, the prices are much lower in the supermarket, while she did not fail to say that weather conditions did not favor production:

“My tomatoes have dried upwe had a lot of heat, we are constantly watering and God knows how much our bill will be” while when asked about consumer behavior she said that “people are having a hard time and are asking for less quantities”.

At the same time, he said that the production costs are high and it is difficult for the producers to cope: “We’re not going out either, don’t you dare. Fertilizer is expensive, water is expensive, 40 cents per cubic meter.

“Just as we survive”

On the same wavelength and Mr. Michalis Stamatakis, producer of Gramvousa:

“If you sell them yourself, you make something, if you take them to the market, you just about cover your expenses. The cost of production now is very high, we barely survive, we don’t make anything more. Daily wages have increased, everything has been raised” while as for whether the weather affected his own production, he said that “those of us who have water are taking it out, but these waters will also dry up”.

“We have no support from anyone – We farmers are crushed”

Finally, Mr. Yiannis Manioudakis, organic pomegranate producer of Episkopi Rethymnon, says that the state is indifferent to the farmers while he mentions his own personal problem, which is that he cannot export his products because he has a cottage industry and there is an obstacle in the legislation :

“We have 2,500 trees and we produce pomegranates organically. We see no support from anyone. We have done cottage industry and we cannot export our products because of the law. They can’t give us a health certificate.”

In fact, Mr. Manioudakis stated that “on pomegranate juice there is a lot of adulteration. I have repeatedly sent documents to the ministries, man does not pay attention. In a short time we won’t even have bread to eat, let the gentlemen sitting on the chairs hear it, and we peasants are crushed”.

Organic pomegranate juice costs 2.5 euros. “We haven’t made an increase in our juice for four years. What has the state done for us, nothing” characteristically says Mr. Manioudakis.
