Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the 6th Department of the Supreme Court will discuss the appeal of the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Marianna Psaroudakis, against the decision of the Mixed Court of Appeal of Lamia, by which it was grantedby a majority for the second time, the mitigation of prior cohabitation to the one convicted of the murder of the 15-year-old Alexandrou Grigoropouloson 6/12/2008, former special guard Epaminondas Korkoneas.

In view of tomorrow’s trial at the Supreme Court, the advocates of the family of Alexandros Grigoropoulos point out that “scandalously, for the second time, the mitigating factor of the previous cohabitation».

Tomorrow, Tuesday 7/11/2023, the 6th Department of the Supreme Court will discuss the appeal petition of the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Mr. Marianna Psaroudakis, for the appeal under no. 39, 40 & 44/2022 of the decision of the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Lamia, by which, by a majority, scandalously, for the second time, the commutation of life imprisonment was granted to the person convicted for the murder of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, on 6/12/2008 , former special guard Epaminondas Korkoneas.

The result of this decision, which is already being appealed, was to release again in June 2022 Epaminondas Korkoneas, who had been sent to prison again in March 2022 with case no. 2/2022 decision of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, which annulled the previous decision of release from prison and recognition of mitigation for the person sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, due to a lack of specific and detailed reasoning and incorrect interpretation and application of the provision for mitigation of the previous sentence of life.

E. Korkoneas, who was initially sentenced to life imprisonment, was released in another scandalous process in July 2019, after 11 years of incarceration, he remained out of prison for almost 3 years, until March 2022, when he was re-arrested due to the reversal of the decision.

But he was released again, with a new scandalous procedure which we denounced, in July 2022, before the ink of the first appeal was dry.

The mother and sister of Alexandros Grigoropoulos are still asking for justice and the memory of the 15-year-old child remains exposed to tactics, inside and outside the Courts, which in practice invalidate the common understanding of the performance of Justice.

It is clear that procedures were launched to ensure the release of Epaminondas Korkoneas and to blatantly disregard the decision of the Plenary of the Supreme Court, by which the granting of leniency was revoked.

It is revealing that there was even an attempt not to summon the family, which, through its lawyers, supports the accusation and it was sought to conduct the proceedings at the Court of Appeal in our absence, which was avoided at the last moment, but was repeated, with an immediate redefinition of the trial and with exclusion of the placement of the family in the audience, which resulted in the new contested decision.

It is characteristic that, for the second time, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Supreme Court accepts the request of the family of the murdered Alexandros Grigoropoulos and requests the annulment of the decision, which causes a strong social and justified institutional reaction.

The murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos has already acquired indelible historicity, social symbolism and characteristics of a case that judges the quality, level and reliability of the functioning of the Justice.

As the years pass, without the memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos being irrevocably vindicated, who was murdered, in cold blood and with direct malice, the basic elements of the operation of constitutional democratic legitimacy and the essential mission of Justice, for the formation of the real content, will be called into question of life, which must have the values ​​and principles of a social rule of law.

We will continue to fight for the vindication of Alexander’s memory and for no other child to be murdered by a policeman’s gun. Chronic impunity and defiant court decisions are what arm the hand of every subsequent murderer.

We stand by the side of Alexander’s family, supporters and defenders of his memory, but also defenders of every subsequent Alexander, whom Justice must protect and let him live!
