After two years of successful performances, “Rosa Eskenazi – The Queen of Rebetiko”, a play by Panagiotis Mentis, directed by Antonis Loudaros, is closing. Today, Sunday, November 5, the last performance will be given at the Sofouli Theatre.
A few words about the project
“Rosa the naziara with the curly hair”, born in Istanbul, of Jewish origin, moved with her family to Thessaloniki, where she began her career.
Charismatic performer of rebetiko and Smyrnaic song, she experienced the most important decades of Greek history.
She went through fire and iron through wars, occupation, dictatorship, without ever ceasing to be a “whirlwind” woman.
Her life transgressive and unpredictable but full of light.
She knew how to rouse the crowds with her jokes and nazis.
The “Hariklaki”the “Dimitrula”the “Lily the Scandal”the “Rabbi – Rabi” and so many other great successes, will take us to some of the cities-stations of her life. Istanbul, Thessaloniki, New York, Bucharest, Athens.
Rosa did the unthinkable. To have a career in an era where the role of women was only that of mother and housewife.
Her scherzas and Nazis that her family was afraid of, were the only swords she had to fight life!
Her voice, a beacon for future generations, like a true Queen commands us even today how to party, how to drink and how to love!
Come and travel with her to the magical age of rebetiko song.
Bright commercials, Rosa in the middle of the stage and the orchestra begins.
Rosa Eskenazi, a woman who changed society and culture.
