Shocks the testimony of a transplant recipient in ERT, who was reborn when she received the heart of a young boy, but also the drama of the bereaved parents Emmas Kariotakiswho with her death gave the highest gift to many of our fellow human beings.
“The only way for me to continue living was to have a heart transplant. I waited a year on the waiting list. Transplantation is real life. As soon as you open your eyes, you immediately understand that something has changed, that you have returned to life. The blood flows, your blood pressure rises, you hear your heartbeat, it is a new reality that you have forgotten. Without all these people, none of us would be here today,” he said the recipient of the heart Katerina Tsandou.
The parents of Emma Kariotakis, whose death shocked the whole of Greece, made the brave decision to donate her organs.
“Organ donation for us was the only option as it was our child’s wish. At some point in time she had told us that if something were to happen to her, she would like us to proceed with organ donation, so for us it was a one-way street. When the options are now reduced, choosing the light is the right choice” says the mother of the donor Kelly Kampaki.
The dynamic on the sensitive topic of transplants seems to be changing in recent years.
According to the data of the National Transplant Organization, in 2022 organs from 69 deceased donors were used for transplantation, while in 2023, we already count 74 organ donors and over 170 solid organ transplants.
