THE Makis Christodoulopoulos began his appearances with his grandson and namesake, Makis Christodoulopoulos junior, by his side.
“ON time” and Sasha Stamati met them at a live show they did in Piraeus, specifically at a well-known shop in Troumba.
Makis Christodoulopoulos junior referred to the bowling he has received, as in the past he weighed 150 kg, but also the relationship he has with his grandfather.
You are the grandson of Makis Christodoulopoulos, Makis Christodoulopoulos junior. How did you decide to get into singing?
I am 29 years old, I have been singing for ten years with my grandfather, I have learned many things from this man. We continue to be together. Now we’re going on tour, we’re going to America for a month. I have some suggestions to perform in a nightclub after Christmas so I can get in the studio as well.
What is it like not only to be the grandson of Makis Christodoulopoulos, but also to have his name?
A lot of people ask me about this. It is a blessing from God to have such a man, not only because he has a good voice and sings well, but above all he is human and it shows. His face shows that he is a very good man, and I have taken many things from him. I grew up with my grandparents from the age of three – they raised me. This was because all my grandfather’s children live near a compound. From the day I slept with my grandparents, I didn’t want to leave there and that’s how they raised me.
Is he strict with you?
He is not strict, he will just tell me “Maki, this is not right”. He gives me advice on what I should do in my personal life, but also in my professional life.
Inevitably, you will be compared to your grandfather as a singer. Does that scare you?
I can’t compare to my grandfather. Christodoulopoulos is Christodoulopoulos. Stratos Dionysiou is Stratos Dionysiou, Kazantzidis is Kazantzidis, Angelopoulos is Angelopoulos. I don’t feel disadvantaged next to my grandfather. I have taken many things from him. Both as a person and at work.
Have you experienced bowling for your ancestry?
Not at all. I declare myself a gypsy from both father and mother. One hundred percent. I’ve been bullied for my weight… When I was little, I was fat. I was 150 kilos. I was upset. They said to me “how are you like this?”.
How did you lose the weight?
I lost it with diet, nutrition and exercise.
