Nikos Xanthopoulos was loved as much as actor as much as singer. He became particularly well-known, popular and beloved in the 60s, mainly playing the role of the poor and downtrodden folk child who lives in misery but is finally redeemed, in the dramatic films of the old Greek cinema.

Nikos Xanthopoulos was born in Nea Ionia, Athens on March 14, 1934. The child of Pontian refugees, he grew up poor with his mother. His father was a cobbler, fisherman and resistance fighter, among other things. His mother raised him alone as his father was absent for long periods of time.

During his teenage years he was athlete of AEK. Besides sports, he loved it reading. Growing up, he decided to work in the theater even though he was initially fascinated by the idea of ​​becoming a philologist. His command then there was Manos Katrakis.

He studied at his School National Theatre. Although a stage actor from 1957 to 1963, he eventually devoted himself to cinema.

In 1970 he founded his own troupe and toured Greece.

Xanthopoulos’s first professional appearance in the theater was with the Katerinas Troupe in comedy Virginia. As a protagonist of the big screen, he was established by the director-producer Apostolos Tegopoulos (Clack Film), with whom he had an exclusive collaboration from 1964 to 1971, in musical drama films.

He made his debut in the films of the newly founded Clack Film in 1963 in the film Broken hearts, in the role of the evil brother-in-law. In 1989 he collaborated with Apostolos Tegopoulos and Panos Kontelis in Minor of a Heart which was released on three tapes and then played on ERT in 16 episodes. Follow it Love That Knew No Borders which was filmed in Athens, Istanbul and Paris. It was released in two tapes and later aired in 8 episodes on MEGA.

He then participated in two other video productions, The Father’s Heart and Love on the Margins which was also played on TV on the ANT1 channel in 1992.

For the needs of the films, Nikos Xanthopoulos became a singer under the guidance of Apostolos Kaldara and Eftychia Papagiannopoulou.

After 1971 he stopped appearing in films and switched to a new career in folk singing. In total he has released 9 albums and 55 singles. His discography includes approx 300 songs. His songs are signed by, among others, Akis Panou, Christos Nikolopoulos, Stavros Xarchakos and others.

During his abstinence from cinema and television, Xanthopoulos had the opportunity to visit and tour in the USA, Australia and almost all of Europe, knowing the acceptance and apotheosis of the Greek diaspora.
