The burial of the former king, Constantine Glyksburg, who died on January 10 at the age of 82, will take place at the former royal estates in Tatoi near their ancestors, as he and his family had wished.

His mother Frederikis is buried there, as well as his father Pavlos.

The funeral expenses will be covered by his family, as the request for public expenditure was rejected by the government. The funeral will be held on January 16 in the Metropolis of Athens. Archbishop Hieronymos will be the one who will perform the exodus procession of the former king, while he will be accompanied by hierarchs.

Tatoi

Tatoi, located at the foot of Mount Parnitha, was built in 1889.

The summer palace of the former Greek royal family was located on the estate. The ancient official name of the area is Decelia. Tatoi is the birthplace of King George II.

The cemetery of the estate

The Cemetery of the royal estate is located in the precincts of the Church of the Resurrection. There are the tombs of kings George I and Olga, princess Alexandra, princess Maria, vice-admiral Periklis Ioannidis, second husband of princess Maria, and also the little princess Olga.

The cemetery at Tatoi was chosen by Queen Olga and established then, in 1880, as a burial place for members of the royal family.

On September 1, 2020, vandalism of the burial monument of Paul and Frederica was found.

The construction of the church, which was necessary for the operation of the cemetery, had been delayed for a long time, so the foundation stone of the church was laid on August 6, 1899.

Ownership

The estate passed to the State, in total, three times, in 1924, 1973 and 1994. Each time, after regime changes, either compensation was paid to the former royal family, or all of its property was confiscated.

In March 2003, Tatoi came definitively into the ownership of the state and in September of the same year it was declared preserved by the Central Council of New Monuments, following a proposal by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage.

The recent fire

In the fire that broke out at the beginning of August 2021, a large part of the estate’s forest was burned. The fire destroyed the staff building, the caretaker’s house, the telecommunications building (telephone office), the forestry office and the Directorate building. Also, two containers in which palace objects were kept were burned.

In fact, he had talks about its utilization with the then prince, now King of England Charles, during his visits to Greece.
